Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington, writing at NcROnline.org on September 23, said that “during the past six months, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in Catholic teaching on war.” McElroy praised the “tremendous progress” made during that period toward “eclipsing the role of the just war tradition in Catholic teaching.” “The just war framework has been distorted to become a source of justification for those inclined to go to war, rather than a constraint on war,” McElroy claimed. Then this: “One of the accelerants for this trend is the unfortunate statement in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that the evaluation of the just war criteria belongs to those who have responsibility for the common good.” The cardinal's statement comes in the wake of Leo XIV’s encyclical 'Magnifica Humanitas'. A priest has been killed and four people injured in a knife attack at the Benedictine abbey in Jarosław, Poland, on September 24. Police say a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked four men and a woman shortly before 9:30 a.m. and was detained at the scene. Fr. Stanisław died from his injuries. Fr. Marek was seriously wounded. The other victims were also hospitalized. The motive has not yet been established.

Hosts from tabernacle scattered across a town square. On September 19, unknown perpetrators entered the Sacred Heart of Mary parish church in Guitiriz, Lugo, Spain, forced open the tabernacle and stole the silver ciborium containing hosts. They were later found scattered outside in the town square. The Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol described the incident as a grave profanation of the Eucharist. The parish filed a complaint and the Guardia Civil opened an investigation. Investigators are reportedly reviewing security cameras from nearby businesses. Bishop Fernando García Cadiñanos will celebrate a Eucharist of reparation at the church on 29 September.

Emmanuel Macron’s decision not to attend the papal Eucharists during Leo XIV’s visit to France is in keeping with France’s state religion of laicism. Jacques Chirac did not attend John Paul II’s celebrations in 1997, nor did Nicolas Sarkozy attend Benedict XVI’s in 2008. The only recent exception was Macron’s presence at Pope Francis’s Eucharist in Marseille in 2023, but the circumstances were different: attending the Mass was effectively the only opportunity for the French president to formally welcome the Pope.

Speaking to Domradio.de on September 22, Cardinal Grech said there is “room for everyone”, but Germany’s proposed Synodal Conference still requires “careful” examination. Synodality, he said, is still “developing”, but the Synod itself is already over. Funeral for a male dancer turns into a comedy performance. Dancer, choreographer, and social worker Thierry Parmentier, 74, was given a funeral in the Catholic church of Caldogno, Italy, on June 24. He had planned the event himself, including its music, choreography and performances. Belgian-born, Parmentier had lived in the Vicenza area for over 40 years and staged productions to raise funds for AIDS research. The church was filled with Doctor Clown volunteers, biodance and holistic practitioners, and stilt-walkers. Don Gigi Maistrello, chaplain to Vicenza prison, preached the homily. After the funeral, an animated procession accompanied the coffin to the parish centre, where the farewell continued with music, dance and performances.

German priest Oliver Wintzek argues on katholisch.de that Islam can be understood as an “alternative form of Byzantine Christianity,” citing St. John of Damascus, who classified Islam as a “heresy.” Wintzek calls Muslims Christians’ “younger siblings.” He rejects describing Islam as a political ideology incompatible with Germany’s constitution and dismisses warnings of “Islamization.” He advocates closer Christian-Muslim relations, even over “döner and baklava.” The medieval Church, however, distinguished between “Christians” and “Saracens.” The Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 explicitly used these as separate categories. Gregory IX’s Decretals of 1234 likewise treated Saracens separately from Christians and Christian heretics.
