Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington, writing at NcROnline.org on September 23, said that “during the past six months, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in Catholic teaching on war.” McElroy praised the “tremendous progress” made during that period toward “eclipsing the role of the just war tradition in Catholic teaching.” “The just war framework has been distorted to become a source of justification for those inclined to go to war, rather than a constraint on war,” McElroy claimed. A priest has been killed and four people injured in a knife attack at the Benedictine abbey in Jarosław, Poland, on September 24. Police say a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked four men and a woman shortly before 9:30 a.m. and was detained at the scene. Fr. Stanisław died from his injuries. Fr. Marek was seriously wounded. The other victims were also hospitalized. The motive has not yet been established.

They were later found scattered outside in the town square. The Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol described the incident as a grave profanation of the Eucharist. The parish filed a complaint and the Guardia Civil opened an investigation. Investigators are reportedly reviewing security cameras from nearby businesses. Cardinal Mario Grech says the Church is “synodal by nature”, but also “hierarchical by nature.” The baptized meet to “make decisions together”, but the bishop must ensure those decisions are correct, and the Pope does so for the universal Church. Speaking to Domradio.de on September 22, Cardinal Grech said there is “room for everyone”, but Germany’s proposed Synodal Conference still requires “careful” examination. Synodality, he said, is still “developing”, but the Synod itself is already over. The three-year implementation phase culminates in a 2028 ecclesial assembly, which Grech stressed is “not a continuation of the Synod.” What follows is for Pope Leo XIV to decide.
