Conservative English Bishop: FSSPX Mass Does Not Ordinarily Fulfil Sunday Obligation
He is one of the most conservative voices in the English hierarchy.
Monsignor Egan told TheCatholicHerald.com on March 11 that recent popes reached out to members of the FSSPX: “As the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X is in an irregular or impaired situation with the Roman Catholic Church at the moment, its priests do not have the explicit faculties from the Ordinary to celebrate the Mass,” he believes.
Bishop Egan referred to Canon 1248 §1, which states that the Sunday obligation is fulfilled when a Catholic attends "a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite.”
In 2019, Bishop Egan visited St Michael’s School in Burghclere, an institution run by the FSSPX. He also has sent the FSSPX in his diocese oil from the Chrism Mass in the Novus Ordo in order to build closer bonds of communion.
Over the decades, various letters from Vatican officials have made contradictory claims about whether or not Catholics can fulfil their Sunday obligation in chapels of the FSSPX.
